MSM Construction assists with Kearl Lake Winterization

MSM Construction Services Ltd. was recently awarded a subcontract by Kiewit Energy to assist with completion of winterization and related insulation priorities for Imperial Oil’s Froth Treatment Facilities in Kearl Lake, Alberta. The project commenced in early October and should be concluded before the end of 2014.

The project’s scope has involved replacement of temporary insulation with permanent insulation and metal cladding in the Solvent Recovery Unit or SRU of the initial development phase of the Froth Treatment Facility.

The Kearl Lake site’s processing facilities have been developed over two phases involving the construction of six froth treatment trains representing the next generation of oil sands technology. The project is a showcase of new, innovative approaches to water usage, tailings treatment, emissions, reclamation and waterfowl protection, representing a significant improvement in environmental performance over earlier oil sands developments. Kearl Lake is the first oil sands mining operation to use paraffinic froth treatment instead of an energy intensive upgrader. It is also the first to utilize cogeneration of energy versus consumption of coal-fired electricity.

Kiewit Energy Canada has provided all labour, construction equipment and bulk materials to build the Froth Treatment Facility and Flare Silo for this major oil sands project, which is part of a 110,000 (expanding to 345,000) barrels per day oil sands mine in northern Alberta. Kiewit’s project scope has included installation of piling, concrete foundation, structural steel, modules, tagged equipment, vessels, piping, electrical and instrumentation.
